Sora alternatives — and the dates OpenAI actually published

Sora is not slowing down, it is closing. Most pages listing Sora alternatives skip the part that decides your timeline: the consumer app is already gone, and the API has a hard end date that is still ahead of you. Here are both dates from OpenAI's own help centre, then seven replacements compared on what they actually cost.

Before the Sora alternatives: the two dates that matter

Quoted from OpenAI's help centre article "What to know about the Sora discontinuation". These are the facts most Sora alternatives round-ups leave out, and they are the ones that set your deadline.

The app is already gone — 26 April 2026

"The Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026." If you are reading a Sora alternatives page because the app stopped working, that is why. It was not an outage.

The API ends 24 September 2026

"The Sora API will be discontinued on September 24, 2026." This is the one that matters if you built anything on it. Anyone shipping against the Sora API has a fixed migration deadline, not an open-ended one.

Your videos get deleted

OpenAI states that after any final export window passes, "we will permanently delete any data associated with your use of Sora." Export before you shop for Sora alternatives — the order matters.

Your credits are not lost

Purchased ChatGPT and Sora credits "can still be used for Codex", per the same article. Worth knowing before you write them off, and refunds go through the standard ChatGPT subscription refund process.

Seven Sora alternatives, compared honestly

Including where we lose. A list of Sora alternatives in which the site publishing it wins every category is an advert, not a comparison.

1 — Zorq AI (this site): per-credit, several models

Veo 3.1, Kling and Seedance behind one generator, paid per clip rather than monthly, 50 free credits on signup. Closest in spirit to how people used Sora casually. Not the answer if you need an API — see option two for that.

2 — Google Veo via the Gemini API

The direct replacement for anyone migrating Sora API code, and the only option here with a comparable enterprise story. Strongest output in this list. Also the strictest content policy, and priced accordingly.

3 — Kling

The most complete consumer product among these Sora alternatives: image-to-video, motion control, character consistency, and a daily free allowance big enough to evaluate properly before paying.

4 — Runway

Pick this if the clip lives inside a real edit. Its timeline, inpainting and camera tooling are ahead of everything else here. Overkill when you only want a clip from a sentence.

5 — Luma Dream Machine

Fast, cheap, and pleasant to iterate in. Motion is less physically convincing than Veo on complex scenes, which shows up most on people walking and on anything involving water.

6 — Hailuo / MiniMax

The cheapest credible output per clip among these Sora alternatives, with a free tier that survives real use. Expect queues at peak hours and a quality step below Veo.

7 — Open-source video models, run locally

Free forever, no filtering but your own, no rate limits, no shutdown risk — which after this year is not a small argument. The price is a capable GPU and a weekend of setup.

What the first of these Sora alternatives produces

Three clips from our own pipeline, so you can judge before signing up. These are Veo 3.1 runs from a plain text prompt — the same job people used Sora for. None of them is a stock library clip.

Picking between Sora alternatives in one question

Skip the table. Answer whichever of these was your actual reason for using Sora.

"I had it wired into an API"

Veo through the Gemini API, and start now rather than in September. Migration work always takes longer than the estimate, and this deadline does not move.

"I just made clips for fun"

A credit-based generator, this one included. No monthly commitment, and you stop paying in the months you stop generating — which is how most casual Sora use actually looked.

"I need audio with the video"

Veo 3.1 generates synchronised audio, which most Sora alternatives still do not. That single requirement narrows this list to essentially one model.

"I never want this to happen again"

Then run open-source models locally. It is the only option here that cannot be discontinued underneath you, and after 2026 that argument deserves more weight than it used to get.

Export your Sora videos before comparing Sora alternatives

Two minutes of work that stops becoming impossible at some point.

Where the export lives

OpenAI's help article points to sora.chatgpt.com/sunset, where an Export button queues your content and emails you when it is ready. Their own guidance is to "export your Sora content as soon as possible".

Why it is urgent rather than merely advisable

The stated policy is permanent deletion after any final export window closes, and OpenAI says only that it will notify by email if such a window is offered. That is not a guarantee of a second chance, so export first and read about Sora alternatives afterwards.

FAQ

Sora alternatives — FAQ

Including the dates and the answers that are not us.

I

Why is Sora AI closing?

OpenAI has not published a detailed reason in the help article itself; press coverage at the time framed it as a strategic refocus, alongside the winding down of the Disney arrangement. What is documented is the timing, and it is why Sora alternatives became an urgent question: the app went on 26 April 2026 and the API goes on 24 September 2026.

II

What is the best alternative to Sora AI?

For output quality, Veo. For casual use without a subscription, a credit-based generator like this one. For an API migration, Veo through the Gemini API. There is no single winner among Sora alternatives, which is why this page asks what you used it for first.

III

Are there any free alternatives to Sora?

Kling's daily allowance and Hailuo's free tier both survive real use, and open-source models are free once you have the hardware. Fifty free credits here cover several clips. Be sceptical of any of the Sora alternatives advertising unlimited free generation.

IV

Is anything better than Sora 2?

On raw output, Veo 3.1 is widely considered ahead, particularly on physical motion and because it generates synchronised audio. Kling is close on character consistency. The comparison is now somewhat academic, since Sora is not a live option.

V

Can I still use Sora right now?

The consumer web and app experiences were discontinued on 26 April 2026, so no. The API remains available until 24 September 2026, which is the only remaining route and a closing one — plan your move to one of the Sora alternatives around that date.

VI

How do I download my Sora videos?

Go to sora.chatgpt.com/sunset and use the Export option; you get an email when the archive is ready. Do this before evaluating Sora alternatives, because OpenAI states data will be permanently deleted after any final export window.

VII

Will I get a refund?

Refunds run through the standard ChatGPT subscription refund process rather than anything Sora-specific. Separately, OpenAI notes that purchased ChatGPT and Sora credits can still be used for Codex, so they are not simply forfeited.

VIII

Which alternative is closest to how Sora felt?

The casual prompt-box experience is closest on Kling and here. Sora's real distinguishing feature was the social feed around it, and none of these Sora alternatives reproduces that — they are generators, not communities.

9

Do my Sora prompts still work?

Subject descriptions carry over fine. Sora tolerated loose direction, whereas the Sora alternatives built on Veo and Kling reward explicit camera moves, lens language and lighting. Expect to add direction rather than to paste prompts unchanged.

10

How long are clips on these alternatives?

Five to fifteen seconds is typical across all seven, ours included. Longer pieces are assembled from several clips, and an extender tool is the usual way to push past a single generation's ceiling.

Veo 3.1, Kling and Seedance behind one generator, paid by credit rather than by month. Fifty free credits on signup — enough to judge it against the other six.
